Many of us avoid discussing, or even thinking about, aging as a possibility. However, there comes a time when the harsh realities of life make pulling your head out of the sand a necessity, and my experience has been that it's not all doom and gloom. "Getting Old" is an absolutely delightful collection of over sixty written works about aging that are both varied and engaging. Some poetry, some short stories. Some comedic, others reminiscent. What they all have in common are a heartfelt look at a phenomenon that we all go through, if we are lucky. I have a parent that I have recently had to put into a facility and this read touched me deeply. Very well done. -- Tricia A.

At times beautiful, funny, sad, and brutal, this eclectic anthology is at all times honest. Each of the writers, in their own way, faces the topic of aging with whatever grace they can muster. The result is a touching book about the elderly and those who care for them in their final years. Getting Old is a collection of poetry and prose, with something for everyone. -- Kimberly Schimmel, MLS

This is an anthology of poems, short stories, and essay focusing on a fact of life; getting old. Each writer in this anthology have their own unique voice, and it all flows together beautifully. The themes range from happy and funny to reminiscent and thoughtful. They range on different topics as well from mammograms to death and loss of loved ones.

I found this anthology interesting and moving at points. To pick out one entry as a favorite would be unfair because they are all wonderful. The poem about mammograms made me chuckle at the end. Oh to have feathers and not need to experience the procedure. Smack In The Eye was another that made me chuckle as I can picture a woman struggling with a needle and thread only to use the same red thread to mend yellow, green and blue clothing. Something I can recall my grandma doing several times. This is a collection that will bring a smile. While we may grow old, we can have doing it, have fun remembering life in the past. While we may grow older, this book will never get old.

Getting Old eBook various authors Ashley Parker Owens Reviews

So glad to have a story included in this anthology. Excellent writing included here!
Wise words, astute perspectives, and appreciations of both the dignity and absurdity of human aging are contained in the dozens of poems and short essays here. Can't imagine a reader who wouldn't find at least several that deeply resonated within them long after turning the last page. And if that happens, perhaps we can approach our own last pages and those of loved ones' with greater grace, kindness and good humor.

The vulnerability of the contributors was appreciated. We need more books like this.
"Full disclosure" here I have a few pieces in this book. Still, I am honored to have been included in a collection that exhibits writers so skilled in humor (wry or otherwise), pathos, and insight. Two of the pieces that have particularly knocked me out are Keith Stewart's "One Shade of Grey" (very funny treatment of one sign of age that plagues most all of us) and Liz Dolan's "The Spelling Test" (as touching as "The Glass" by Sharon Olds). Still, many of these pieces stand out, and as one of its contributing writers, I will speak for the others and hope other readers will want to share in the experience of "Getting Old," whether you are there yet or waiting to arrive.
